Every so often, a coffee comes along that doesn't just taste exceptional ...it tells a story of resilience, renewal, and a horizon just beginning to open.
Boom Vang - Bolivia, Caranavi, our Navigator's Reserve and Limited edition for Coffee of the Month May 2026: a single-origin from Bolivia that captures both the legacy and the future of one of South America's most promising coffee regions.
From the Heart of Caranavi
Grown in the lush hills of Caranavi, La Paz ...often considered the beating heart of Bolivia's coffee production... this coffee is cultivated at 1,500 MASL in rich clay loam soils. Here, 33 small farms organized under COOP Agricola Cafetalera San Juan work in harmony to produce coffees rooted in tradition and elevated by precision.
Featuring Typica, Caturra, and Catua varietals, this lot reflects the diversity and potential of the region ...each plant contributing its own voice to the final cup.
Crafted with Care, Not Compromise
At San Juan, quality isn't an afterthought ...it's the standard.
Each farmer processes their own coffee using a shared protocol:
- Only perfectly ripe cherries are selected
- Beans are floated to sort by density
- Carefully depulped and fermented for 18-24 hours
- Then fully washed and sun dried on raised beds
From there, every lot passes through a central quality control system ...ensuring only the best coffees make the journey beyond Bolivia's borders.
This is craftsmanship at every step. No shortcuts. No guesswork.
A Cooperative Reborn
Founded in 1974, Cooperativa Agrícola Cafetalera San Juan began with a simple mission: support small family farms through sustainable, chemical-free practices.
But like many great voyages, the journey wasn't without its storms.
Between 2006 and 2017, production declined as aging trees and reduced investment took their toll. Then came a turning point. With the arrival of Felix Chambi Garcia (bringing over 16 years of specialty coffee expertise) the cooperative began its revival.
Today, San Juan is stronger, more focused, and producing some of its best coffees yet ...driven by a new generation that believes deeply in Bolivia's untapped potential.
