A High-Altitude Journey Worth Brewing
“Reefing Line - Rwanda, Gakenke” begins in Gatagara Village, nestled in Rwanda’s Gakenke District, where 836 smallholder farmers, organized around the celebrated Ruli Coffee Washing Station, grow some of the most distinct coffee in the world. These farmers are part of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, a pioneering group known for its sustainability, quality, and majority women-led workforce.
Grown at elevations of 1,800-2,100 MASL in nutrient-rich volcanic loam, the local bourbon cultivars thrive under the careful stewardship of these farmers. The result? A roast that’s bright, complex, and well balanced, with tasting notes of papaya, passion fruit, apricot, lemon, and caramel.
Why We Call It “Reefing Line”
In sailing, a reefing line prepares the sails ...and the crew... for changing winds and shifting conditions. This roast does the same for your day. Whether you’re up before sunrise or winding down at sea, this cup equips you with clarity, balance, and a bit of boldness ...the same qualities that define the Dukunde Kawa community.
The Ruli Process: A Commitment to Craft
Ruli Station, established in 2004, is now the largest in the Dukunde Kawa network. Its high elevation allows for slow ripening and extended harvesting ...some farmers picking into October. The meticulous fully washed process includes hand-sorting, fermentation without water, soaking, and natural density grading through flowing channels. After 14-21 days on raised drying beds, the result is a coffee as clean and consistent as it is flavorful.

Dukunde Kawa’s excellence extends beyond flavor. With certifications including Fair Trade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and UTZ, the cooperative is committed to equity, empowerment, and environmental care. The organization has earned SCA sustainability honors and ranked in the Rwanda Cup of Excellence, setting a gold standard for what specialty coffee can achieve.
