Charting a New Course: From Sailor to Instructor

Charting a New Course: From Sailor to Instructor

Every sailor remembers the moment it stopped being just a hobby.

Maybe it was the first clean tack in steady wind. The first solo docking. The first sunrise passage where the water felt less intimidating and more like home. Somewhere along the way, sailing becomes more than movement ...it becomes understanding.

Later this month, Frank will be taking another step along that journey by participating in the American Sailing Association ASA 190, ASA 201, and ASA 202 courses with the goal of becoming a sailing instructor.

And honestly? We can't think of a better fit.

More Than Certifications

These courses aren't just about checking boxes or collecting credentials. They represent something deeper: a commitment to seamanship, safety, leadership, and the ability to help others discover confidence on the water.

For anyone who has spent time sailing, you know the best instructors do more than teach technique.

They:

  • Build calm in uncertain moments
  • Turn mistakes into lessons
  • Help students trust themselves
  • Make complicated things feel approachable

And sometimes, they also know exactly when someone needs a cup of coffee before attempting a docking maneuver for the fifth time.

That part matters too.

Learning Never Really Stops

One of the beautiful things about sailing is that nobody ever truly "finishes" learning.

Every condition changes the equation:

  • Wind shifts
  • Tides turn
  • Equipment humbles you
  • Nature keeps your ego appropriately calibrated

Pursuing instructor-level education means embracing that mindset fully ...showing up ready to refine skills, absorb knowledge, and continue growing both on and off the water.

That spirit has always been part of Skipper's Remedy®.

Curiosity. Discipline. Adventure. And enough caffeine to survive early morning briefings.

Why This Matters to Us

Skipper's Remedy® has always lived at the intersection of coffee culture and life on the water. The people who inspire this brand are sailors, adventurers, marina wanderers, early risers, and lifelong learners.

Seeing Frank pursue sailing instruction feels like a natural extension of that story.

Because great instructors help grow the sailing community. They create safer boaters, more confident crews, and more people willing to leave the dock and discover what's waiting beyond the harbor.

That's a journey worth supporting.

Coffee for the Early Watches Ahead

Let's be honest ...training days start early.

There will be:

  • Study sessions
  • Skill drills
  • Weather discussions
  • Knot practice
  • Docking repetitions
  • And probably at least one moment where the wind decides to become "educational"

Fortunately, coffee was built for exactly this kind of mission.

Looking Ahead

We're excited to follow this next chapter and share pieces of the journey along the way ...from training days and lessons learned to the experiences that come with stepping into a teaching role.

Because every capable sailor was once a beginner.
And every great instructor remembers what that felt like.

Fair winds to Frank as he charts this next course. We'll keep the coffee ready at the dock.
