Inhaul Nicaragua: A Single Origin Story of Resilience and Flavor

This June, we’re proud to feature a truly exceptional Single Origin coffee as our Limited Edition Coffee of the Month: Inhaul Nicaragua - Peñas Blancas, Matagalpa.
Hailing from the mist-shrouded slopes of Finca La Flor in Peñas Blancas, Matagalpa, Nicaragua, this coffee is the work of dedicated grower Haroldo Altamirano. Located at 1,200 meters above sea level, the farm has been cultivating high-quality coffees since 1987 and sits just north of La Dalia, bordering the Jinotega region. Haroldo’s 14-hectare farm grows primarily Catimor and Marsellesa varieties, focusing on careful hand-picking and sustainable post-harvest methods.
This particular lot is fully washed, and the processing is nothing short of meticulous. After the cherries are depulped, the mucilage is removed using eco-conscious techniques, including recycled water. The beans are gently dried over 72 hours and rested in silos before export. The result is a coffee graded Strictly High Grown (SHG) and boasting an SCA cupping score of 84.0.
When brewed, Inhaul Nicaragua delivers a comforting and complex cup. Expect maple syrup aroma, flavors of brown sugar, dark chocolate, almond, cocoa butter, and oranges, all layered with a medium citrus acidity, a milky mouthfeel, and a nutty aftertaste. It’s a Medium Roast that’s bold yet balanced ...perfect for reflective mornings or steady afternoons at sea.
But what truly makes this offering special is the story behind it. In 2020, hurricanes Eta and Iota devastated the region, bringing heartbreaking loss to families, farms, and infrastructure. Haroldo and his family have since committed to rebuilding, not only their farm but also their community. Their current project? A new health clinic for farmworkers and their families. Through partnerships with leaders in the Southern California LatinX community, efforts are underway to provide long-term aid to Nicaragua and neighboring countries.
