Out on the open water, every detail matters. From the trim of your sails to the steadiness of your helm, success often comes down to precision, preparation, and the quality of what fuels the crew. The same holds true for coffee ...a sailor’s most trusted companion on early departures, late watches, and celebrations after a race well-sailed. But not all coffee is created equal.
Let’s break it down:

The Four Grades of Coffee
Specialty Grade (Grade 1):
The highest standard in the world of coffee. Only beans free of major defects and bursting with unique flavor profiles earn this title. Sourced with care, roasted with precision, and delivered fresh, this is the coffee your crew deserves.
Premium Grade (Grade 2):
A step down, but still decent. Premium grade has more defects and lacks the consistency or complexity of specialty-grade beans.
Exchange Grade (Grade 3):
Your average supermarket coffee falls here. More defects, uneven roasts, and generic flavors. It will fill your mug, but not your spirit.
Below Standard Grade (Grade 4):
The bottom of the barrel. These beans are often used in industrial blends, instant coffee, or mass-market products. Let's be honest, they’re cheap for a reason.

Why Specialty Grade Matters at Sea
When you’re sailing, your coffee isn’t just about taste ...it’s about morale, energy, and shared moments with your crew. Specialty grade coffee transforms the morning watch into a ritual, fuels bold maneuvers during a race, and brings comfort after a long passage. Each sip reflects care, craft, and adventure ...the very same qualities sailors bring to the water.
At Skipper’s Remedy®, we roast only Specialty Grade (Grade 1) coffee, because we believe your crew deserves nothing less. Bold crews deserve bold brews ...crafted to keep your mug full and your compass pointed toward adventure.
So next time you’re stocking provisions, remember: good coffee gets you by, but great coffee, specialty grade, fuels your crew.
