Reefing Line - Rwanda: Jarama. Navigator's Reserve: Coffee of the Month - April 2026

A Balanced Approach to Flavor, Craft, and Seamanship

In sailing, knowing when to reef is a mark of experience. The reefing downhaul is a line that runs through a cringle on the luff of the sail, allowing you to pull the sail down and secure it near the boom ...reducing sail area and maintaining control as the wind builds. While some sailors wait until 15-20 knots to reef, seasoned skippers often act earlier, trimming sail at 10-15 knots to stay balanced, steady, and in command.

At Skipper's Remedy®, we see coffee in much the same way. It's not about pushing to extremes ...it's about balance, timing, and precision.

That philosophy is captured perfectly in Reefing Line - Rwanda: Jarama, Cyiya, our Navigator's Reserve, a Limited edition for Coffee of the Month April 2026.

A Coffee That Honors Balance

This offering showcases the refined character of a Single-Origin from Rwanda Jarama (Cyiya Community), roasted to a medium level (leaning medium/light to preserve the sweet, fruit notes). Much like reefing a sail at just the right moment, this roast level is carefully chosen to maintain clarity, structure, and nuance ...without overpowering the natural character of the bean.

The result is a beautifully composed cup.

Tasting the Voyage

Expect a smooth, layered profile with notes of peach, guava, brown sugar, tea-like florals, and a soft caramel finish. Each sip unfolds with gentle brightness and balanced sweetness, offering a cup that feels both vibrant and composed.

It's a coffee that doesn't rush... it reveals itself steadily, like a well-trimmed sail finding its rhythm in steady wind.

Rooted in Place: Cyiya Village, Rwanda

Grown in Cyiya Village, Nyamasheke District, Western Province, Rwanda, this coffee thrives at elevations of 1,700–1,900 MASL, where cooler temperatures and rich volcanic loam soil create ideal growing conditions.

The beans (local Bourbon varieties) are cultivated by smallholder farmers organized around the Murundo coffee washing station, then processed using a fully washed method to highlight clarity and structure in the cup.

This lot comes from the Jarama Washing Station, operated by the Kivubelt group near the lush Nyungwe Forest ...an area known for producing some of Rwanda's most expressive coffees.

A Commitment to Quality and Community

Founded in 2011, Kivubelt was built on a mission to improve both coffee quality and local livelihoods. Today, the organization works with over 500 smallholder farmers, providing training, support, and fair compensation ...often paying up to 50% above local market rates for exceptional coffee.

This dedication shows in every cup.

The region is celebrated for coffees with deep sweetness and layered complexity, and this lot stands as a shining example of that reputation ...crafted not just by ideal growing conditions, but by the collective care of the farming community.

Trimmed for the Perfect Course

Just as reefing early keeps a vessel balanced and responsive, this coffee is roasted with intention ...preserving its natural sweetness, maintaining structure, and allowing its full character to shine.

Reefing Line - Rwanda: Jarama, Cyiya is more than a coffee. It's a reminder that the best outcomes (on the water and in the cup) come from thoughtful adjustments, respect for conditions, and a steady hand at the helm.

So as you brew your next cup, take a moment to appreciate the balance.
